Rick and I worked together making connections between MECC and Wise County Schools. I always appreciated Rick's wry sense of humor, his integrity, and the kindness he had for all. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. I have many fond memories of Rick. He will be missed.

I am an employee of the City of Kingsport, IT Department. Rick was employed here in the late 80's to early 90's before he accepted his job at MECC. Rick was still working in Kingsport when his daughter was born. I recall his commuting from Big Stone Gap to Kingsport each day. Of our current staff, four of us worked with Rick and remember him fondly. We saw the obituary in the Kingsport Times News and were shocked to learn that our former fellow employee had passed on. Rick was a young man full of energy and enthusiasm when I knew him, and it looks like he kept that passion through his years at MECC. At age 53, he is certainly leaving us way too soon. God's love and peace to Rick and all his family and friends.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this....

I first met Rick about 4 years ago. He was one of my first customers when I moved to Roanoke. From the first time we spoke, I could tell that Rick was a true gentleman. Even though it took me about 3.5 hours to make the drive from Roanoke, I always looked forward to speaking with Rick and listening to him share stories about his love of motorcycles, planes, and life. It was easy to forget that I was there on business. For anyone that has met Rick, you know that he makes you feel like a close friend within minutes of first meeting him. He had a true gift for that. Even though I haven't talk to Rick in some time, I always knew that we would pick back up as though time had never passed.

This physical world has lost a great person, but heaven will forever be grateful that he has arrived there to see the special man that he is. Rest in peace Rick. May God give comfort to your family and friends during this time.

Its not many people that take a chance on a guy with a funny accent, but Rick was one of those people. He wasn't just a work buddy and boss, he was a true friend. I can count on one hand the number of people that would come out and help me change a serpentine belt on a truck in the pouring rain, snow and cold. But that was Rick. Not only was he instrumental in my career, but he was a true friend. Someone who I could call and chat about the inane stuff, or talk about the important stuff. He was truly one of a kind. The immensity of the man cannot be overstated. He was a true gentleman. I could tell you abou the many late nights, working in IT you tend to have those, that we worked figuring out problems that not many people see or care about...He was an intelligent, down to earth, caring person ....an amazing man who I was proud to call a friend. He will forever be in my heart. I miss you mate.

Rick made a huge impact on my life. Over the past several years people has often asked me why I live in the rural town of Big Stone Gap, VA instead of being a fancy pant magician living in a big city or on a cruise ship. Some people do not know that I have two careers….. 1. Joseph Young the Magician & 2. Joseph Young the Information Technology Specialist at Mountain Empire Community College (MECC). Rick Campbell hired me December 1995 to be an employee at MECC. April 1996 I started to perform at a few local parties, VBS, reunions, etc. as a magician as a hobby. I had no idea that by 2004 I would be a popular magician performing all over the nation and winning awards for my magic act. Personally I debated many times on wondering what to do to balance my day job with my busy traveling magic schedule. It has been a dream of mine to perform and it is something I never wanted to give up. My boss, Rick Campbell allowed me to manage both my careers and I will FOREVER be grateful to him. Not many people would have understood my position, but Rick changed my life by allowing me to support my family with both careers. Rick Campbell you will be truly missed and never be able to be replaced.
